This Month’s Build, Featuring AMD and Nvidia

For September 2022, our Content Creation PC Build features the powerful AMD Threadripper Pro 5975X 32-core processor, cooled by a massive 360mm liquid cooler. Backing up the processor is the ultra-fast Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, which offers plenty of brawn for any content creation task, and an impressive 24GB VRAM allocation to back it up.

As for storage, this system uses an 8TB PCIe Gen 4 drive, which will keep up with any workflow. The system is also decked out in the memory department, with 256GB of DDR4-3600 RAM operating in eight-channel mode for unbeatable bandwidth. Powering the system is a 1200W Platinum-rated power supply, and for the chassis, we go with the professionally-styled SilverStone Seta Q1, the quietest case ever designed!

The DIY Build

  • CPU

    AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5975WX

    $3299
Oh, how times have changed. AMD owns the productivity crown, and its 5975WX offers next-generation content creation and workstation-class performance to consumers. Packing in 32 cores, 64 threads, and per-core efficiency that beats Intel, it’s simply way ahead of anything else that’s come before it. Plus, the PRO line offers up 128 PCIe lanes and 8-channel RAM support!
    The Guru’s Tip

We are specifically going with the 32-core model here rather than the 64-core model because many applications simply will not make proper use of the 64-core CPU, calling into question its value proposition.

  • Motherboard

    Asrock WRX80 Creator @Newegg

    $900
Asrock offers up a true workstation-class motherboard with its WRX80 Creator, supporting Threadripper PRO CPUs on the sWRX8 Socket. It has eight USB ports, including dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, dual PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots, WiFi 6E, dual Intel 10G LAN ports, and an 8 phase power system with a 105A power stage.
    The Guru’s Tip

To engage eight-channel memory mode, we are spec'ing an 8-stick memory kit.

  • Video Card

MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti 24GB Gaming X Trio

    $1130
Hail to the king! The absolutely mind-blowing RTX 3090 Ti 24GB goes beyond extreme, beating the original 3090 by 10% thanks to an increase in CUDA cores and faster VRAM. And this model from MSI offers the best air cooler available, which is MSI’s specialty!
    The Guru’s Tip

This card provides a massive amount of content-creation acceleration, and with 24GB of VRAM, there's virtually no limit to the size of the files you can process! And by the way, EVGA's Step-Up program allows you to trade a card in within 90 days of purchase if a new model is available, which may just happen in that timespan!

Sabrent is constantly out ahead of the competition in taking capacity to new heights, and after being the first manufacturer to release a 4TB PCIe Gen 4 drive, it’s not surprising to find that Sabrent is the first to market with an 8TB PCIe Gen 4 drive. It’s the biggest, fastest M.2 SSD on the market!
    The Guru’s Tip

In this system, you can run one of these 8TB drives or dual 4TB drives. We recommend an 8TB drive to leave one M.2 slot free for additional large-capacity drives down the line.

It also has sweet looking RGB lighting that can be sync’d with your motherboard’s ARGB controls! While it includes thermal paste, we recommend you get the most out of this cooler by using Noctua’s NT-H2 Thermal Paste Kit!
    The Guru’s Tip

This cooler's transfer plate is specially designed for Threadripper's large surface area. By the way, once you mount this cooler to the top of the chassis, make sure to remove the case's pre-installed sound-dampening panel.

Microsoft Windows 11 Pro Flash Drive

    $200
Windows 10 was a big step up from Windows 8.1, and Microsoft jumps ahead yet again with Windows 11. It’s definitely the operating system you want on a modern PC, and the Pro version provides the best security, along with compatibility with the highest-end configurations!
    The Guru’s Tip

The Pro version can use up to 2TB of system RAM, up from the 128GB limit of the Home version. Because this system has 256GB of RAM, this OS is a requirement for this build.

  • The Ultimate Business Keyboard

Logitech MX Mechanical Wireless Illuminated Keyboard

    $170
Logitech has cooked up the ultimate productivity keyboard with its MX Mechanical. Logitech has selected a low-profile switch, which keeps the profile of the keyboard slim and cuts down on excess travel to make the keys feel even faster. That alone would be enough, but Logitech has also amazingly designed the MX Mechanical to be both illuminated and wireless. The built-in battery will hold a charge for up to 15 days when illuminated, and up to 10 months with the backlighting off. Basically, you can have it your way: run it with the USB-C cable connected for non-stop illumination, go fully wireless and plug in ever few weeks, or shut off the lights if you don’t need them and go wireless for nearly a year! Of course, you still get multiple connection options, including the advanced Bolt USB receiver or Bluetooth Low Energy, plus Logitech’s unique Flow  system for running on 3 systems simultaneously!
