be quiet! Pure Base 500 ATX Case Review

By Ari Altman | Published October 18, 2019 | Updated October 18, 2019

Pros

Classic styling; fantastic balance of thermals and noise levels; lots of configuration options, dual 140mm fans

Cons

The fans are a little louder than true high-end 140mm fan, but that’s excusable at the case’s pricepoint

Introduction

We always start our case reviews by noting how many cases we’ve reviewed here on TBG, and with this review we’re up to 29. Given that PCs are ultimately defined by the cases they are housed in, we think it’s a critically-important component, so we keep reviewing every interesting case we can get our hands on, despite the fact that cases are by far the hardest component to review, as you actually need to build a PC in them to know how they work! Because we’ve built up so many, we have a pretty good sense of what makes a great case, and where the rest of PC cases fall behind.

That’s why we’re so excited to publish a review of be quiet!’s brand-new budget-friendly ATX case, the Pure Base 500. It’s a ground-up redesign, with the latest in PC trends and innovations taken into consideration. Sure, it looks a lot like previous be quiet! cases, which is a great thing, but underneath the skin, it’s actually far more modern, which means right off the bat we knew we’d like it more than the expensive be quiet! Dark Base Pro 900 Rev. 2, which we reviewed not too long ago and found a pain to work with. Maybe the “500”, which comes in under $100, doesn’t have all the fancy bells and whistles of its $270 older brother, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a better case!

Special thanks to be quiet! for providing us a sample of the Pure Base 500 Grey Tempered Glass Case featured in this review.

TBG’s Video Review

Going forward, all of TBG’s reviews will come exclusively in the form of YouTube videos, which provide far more detail and insight into production design and functionality than a written review ever could.

Conclusion

Sometimes, it pays to start with a clean slate, and that’s what be quiet! has done with the Pure Base 500. Designed around the components and layouts common in ultra-modern PCs, it’s essentially the perfect PC case for the price. Offering tremendous capacity, cool and quiet operations, multiple configuration options for nearly every CPU cooler on the market, plus that distinctive and distinguished be quiet! styling, it’s what happens when a manufacturer allows function to drive the form.

The Pure Base 500 is the best all-around case we’ve reviewed in years, seriously. That makes it an obvious pick for our TBG’s PC Buyer’s Guides, which highlight our top 24 favorite cases on the market! The Pure Base 500 Grey Tempered Glass Case is currently available for $89.99 shipped free from Newegg. Once it becomes available at Amazon, the Pure Base 500 will be featured as our new case of choice in our very popular $1,250 Quiet Gaming PC Buyer’s Guide!
