Networking / Upgrading network
« on: May 12, 2018, 09:07:29 AM »
So I want to upgrade my network when I move.  I want to get a new modem so I don't pay the rental fee.  I noticed  the networking guide here was last updated in September 2017.  The link to the cable modem is discontinued.  What cable modem do you recommend?  My internet speeds is going to be 400 Mbps and is with Suddenlink.

Secondly do you still recommend the routers you mentioned on there?

I am really looking forward to seeing your review on these.

CPUs, Motherboards, and Overclocking / Threadripper and crypto mining
« on: February 18, 2018, 05:39:37 AM »
Apparently now Threadripper can be used for crypto mining.  The article said that this is something that high end desktop users can do with their unused threads.  The economics of it is viable enough to pay for your processor and possibly your system within a year.  I doubt it will wipe out the Threadripper supply as you need a motherboard for each chip, but it may push people to higher end parts of they can recoup their costs.

Hot Deals / Vega bundle

AMD is releasing veg a and with it you can get 200 dollars off of Samsung CF791 Series 34-Inch Curved Widescreen Monitor (C34F791)  and a 100 bucks off of a Ryzen processor and motherboard combo. Seems like a great deal for system builders.  Does the monitor stack up well against that Dell you linked to in the stock traders build?

The Gaming/HTPC Mini-ITX Build / Console killer
« on: March 18, 2017, 01:00:13 PM »
My computer finally died so now I am looking to build a HTPC.  Since Microsoft is pretty much blurring the lines between console P.C., I should just go ahead and send my gaming back to P.C. So here are my thoughts.

I want to start with your 750 mini-it's HTPC build and upgrade it.

I really like the Fractal Node 202 case so keep it.

Not really interested in overclocking so keep the motherboard ( although I might consider the Asus ROG)

Processor will be a 7700k

SSD upgraded to 1 TB

Graphics card EVGA 1070 SC ( I highly doubt a 1080 would work)

CPU cooler: Recommendation?

Will this work?

Has anyone seen this thing? It is a pretty sweet looking board (layout wise).

The HTPC Build / Some changes to the $750 for my trading computer
« on: December 14, 2016, 06:53:54 AM »
I was thinking about upgrading the ram to 32 gb.  16 gb is probably plenty, but ram is cheap, particularly for this build, so why not, particularly since my software is a memory hog.  Would this kit work?

Also I want a little bit more processing muscle under the hood, so I was thinking about going with a 6600k or 6700k instead.

I will most likely output this out to my 60 inch LED T.V. (not 4k yet) as it will double as an HTPC, so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Also the build will require some type of blue ray player.  Is that a possibility or do I need to get an external drive for this?

Does anyone have any experience  with these? I would like to digitize all my entertainment  media so it is accessible  by all my wireless devices including PCs, tablets, and Xbox One. Is this even possible ?

I am currently  using them cable provider's router. Well as I am adding devices to their network, I have hit a wall as they provider's routers limit me to 5 wireless   access points. Any suggestions ?
