Peripherals (Monitors, Keyboards, Mice, Printers, etc.) / Blue light....
« on: September 15, 2018, 07:18:34 AM »
Over the last 4 months, I have been gaming online a great deal and watching lots of streaming tennis tournaments on my desktop (I have Tennis Channel+ and ESPN3). Within the last month I started getting eye strain with pain and headaches. (In my life I've prob only had 1 or 2 headaches before this)

I began doing some research. That's exactly what the issue was. Excessive exposure to blue light with resulting eye strain and headaches. About a week ago I bought the Blue Light Protect Filter (BLP 45) from 'Eyes PC' (in CA). For the 27" monitor model I think I paid @ $65. It's a high-quality clear acrylic panel that installs easily over my Acer (the top of the filter has a lip that holds it in place on the monitor).

I've had it for about 5-7 days now..... no more headaches nor eye strain....  AWESOME! And I do not work for that company nor do any of my friends or relatives... :)

EK cpu cooling has what seems to be a quality liquid cpu cooling kit called the EK-MLC-Phoenix. Anyone have knowledge of their products?

I know it's tough to look ahead, but....

By 1st quarter 2019...
*4k 27" IPS G-sync gaming monitors w/ super-fast refresh...
*Z390 and/or X399 Intel chipsets?
*Intel i9-9900k..(
*nVidia 1180 GPU...

And whether a new MB w/ new cpu would even fit in a Mini-ITX form-factor case... It was a hard build in 2016 working in an Ncase Mini-ITX size... move up in case size...

(Well, if I stop going to Dunkin' 5 days a week ($60/month)...@ $400. more towards new system......... :) Ha...)

Networking / Wi Fi streaming to home theater in basement...

Hi Ari

Thinking once again of being a consumer-lemming-bad-boy...

Current A/V setup downstairs:
50" Pioneer #5010 Kuro Plasma TV (2008)
Onkyo TX-SR606 Receiver (past major problem) (2008)
Panasonic Blu-ray player #DMP-BD30 (2008)
2 JBL #100 speakers, 1 Polk Center Channel #CS1 series 2
XBox hand-me-down from son... never used. (PC gamer only)

What I may be purchasing:
LG 55" OLED C7 ($1,700 Amazon)
Sony #STRDN1080 7.2 A/V receiver ($498.)
Roku Ultra 4k HDR streamer ($99.)
Replacement 4K Blu-ray at later date

In the upstairs computer room is the modem/router/telephone combo unit (from Cox, the Arris TG1682)   where our PC's are. We have the fastest DL/UL speed tier from Cox. It's approx 35-40' from the router to the downstairs A/V setup.

I'm thinking I need a WiFi extender... What do you think? ....and if yes, then which one?

I would be moving only the Pioneer Plasma to our bedroom to replace the TV there.

Networking / DOCSIS 3.1, need new modem, with complications...of course...

HI, ARI...   :D

"It's always something"... Yup, what Gilda R said...

I'm a Cox customer in Rhode Island. In order for me to get the top speed tier from Cox (we have the second fastest tier now), they say I will need to get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. The problem is that I currently have a Cisco  DPQ3212 combo modem/phone controller unit. My router is a Netgear Nighthawk X4S R7800.

Cox's private label 'Panoramic WiFi' (model TG2472 or TG1682) internet & phone modem I believe is an Arris. It seems tough to get DOCSIS 3.1 with a combo modem similar to the Cisco I currently have. Also, is there a way to use my Netgear router with a DOCSIS 3.1 combo modem from someone?

As you can see, I'm not really sure what the heck I'm talking about.

Just an FYI...

The Amazon link for the Logitech G403 wireless mouse is incorrect...

Networking / Optimizing settings for PC gaming...

I came across this utility program. , and specifically,

I think 'back in the day' I used this to help with router settings, etc to try to improve online gaming. I'm wondering if would would help now. Routers now seem to be more gamer-friendly.

I'm now using my new rig I just built, and my wife bought (ha) my previous rig(built April, 2011).

Should I replace the AIO CPU cooler on it because of it's age, or if it suddenly fails, would the motherboard automatically shut down to prevent damage? It's an Asus P8P67 with an i7-2600k cpu at stock speed, with an nVidia 980Ti.

I lost track of where the heck I started on this issue I have in these forums... Not resolved as I have been busy w/ other matters... Somewhere you responded on this topic back to me.

I would like to run both sticks of this mem, but if not possible then substitute slower if that's necessary to be rock-stable and OC the CPU down the road.

Hard Drives, SSDs, and Memory / Need a new external hard drive...
« on: November 02, 2016, 03:09:29 AM »
I'm considering getting a new backup external hard drive.

I currently have an old WD 'MyBook3.0' 1TB from 2011. It often just goes away/is invisible in device manager, and then a few days later it's back from trick or treating I guess. Once before I had to replace the power wart/cable which for whatever reason had overheated.

Size-wise I was thinking of 3-5 TB... What would be your top recommendations in that size range?

I have a question into WD tech support to get this old one going so that when I get the new one I can transfer over the files.

I'm getting an ESET anti-virus program warning message every 20 min or so, approx stating
"ESET blocked an ICMP flood attack from a computer on your network sending malacious traffic..."

Just got the new comp set up and running for a few days now...

Will fiddle/diddle w/ it for a week or so, then thinking about trying a major OC of the CPU... any great articles around with my components of someone that did that? I'll prob be limited with the Noctua C14 air HSF (with one fan, lower position), though I do have 2 excellent 120mm Vardar fans set up to exhaust air on the side panel.

I have M-Audio AV40 speakers (with RCA's, powered, 2.0) and Sennheiser PC360 headset for gaming with my PC when the Boss is home.

I need a reasonably priced DAC that fits the above under @ $200. I was considering one of the the Audio Engine models.

Thoughts? / ideas folks? Not sure this post makes sense as I am on pre-op valium...(oh baby)...

On my way to another oral surgeon procedure for the new inplant tooth (screw into the jaw... sounds ominous). I HATE dental pain...knock me out and wake me when it's over... catch you later this afternoon when I'm back.

If I ever get this new rig assembled (been very busy lately), what options/choices will come up on the screen as I turn the new rig on for the first time to install the Win 10 flash drive edition?
