Video Cards / GeForce 1660 ti question.
« on: March 07, 2019, 09:19:11 AM »
Hello.

With the new lower priced GeForce 1660 ti's I've decided maybe the best idea for me right now is to pick one up and then do a build from the ground up in a year or two.

I've seen that the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1660 Ti WINDFORCE OC 6G Graphics Card, 2 x WINDFORCE Fans, 6GB 192-Bit GDDR6, GV-N166TWF2OC-6GD Video Card is recommended in the $1000 pc build, so of all the variants, I'd assume this is TBG's pick?

The only problem is my monitor doesn't have HDMI or Displayport 1.4.  I just have DVI, which it doesn't look like this card has.  I'd like to keep my monitor as my goal was to do one last minor upgrade to my existing rig to get me 1-2 more years before I do a full system build and buy a new monitor as well.

So my question is should I purchase an alternative?  Such as EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti XC GAMING, 06G-P4-1263-KR, 6GB GDDR6, HDB Fan which looks to be boosted to the same clock speed and does have a DVI port

or

Buy the Gigabyte Card and a DVI to HDMI cable?  Does that work, or do you get weird artifact lag or something like that?  Is performance lost in the translation process?

Thank you.  If a TBG mod sees this and provides links I can buy through places where you get credit.

Ok good to know, it sounds like it's well worth the extra $150.  Thank you for your advice!

Hello Ari, me again.  Hoping to tackle this $1750 build after i get my taxes back.  I had a monitor question.  I think a 30 inch display might be too 'big' for my little space, how would the 27inch monitor suggested in another build work? (Dell Gaming S2716DGR 27.0" Screen LED-Lit Monitor with G-SYNC)

Thank you so much Ari!  I'm feeling confident to try this build on my own now =)

Thank you for the warm welcome!  And thanks for the advice!  How does having two drives work now days?  I feel fairly confident installing both an SSD and serial ata (mechanically speaking), but do you have to designate one as the primary, or master/slave like the old days?  Or is it something as simple as installing both correctly and picking which drive is the primary boot device in bios?

One more question - I never overclock, so in the past I've used the heatsink that comes with the processor.  I believe last time it already had thermal paste on it (which alleviates the worry for me of using too much or too little).  If I don't plan to overclock, can I used the default intel heatsink that comes with the processor and skip the after market one?  (assuming intel processors still come with stock heatsinks)

Thanks!  Super excited to try this build.  My brother and I are thinking of both building our own pcs using this build!

Hello!

I like this build and am considering trying it.  I have a couple questions.

I would like to also include a large (3tb) serial ata hard drive so I have plenty of room, but I'm a little nervous about how to actually set it up correctly since it would be a deviation from the guide (also curious about recommendations).  My friend has always helped me build PCs in the past, but he's living overseas now, so he won't be available.  This means I know roughly how things fit together, but am not sure on all the details (hence why I was going to follow your guide)

Also, have you ever considered making videos of your builds?  I'd love to see them.
